On Feb. 6, a team of students from the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine led a project to design and build the world’s fastest telescope. The telescope, which is named after Sir Patrick Moore, will be able to focus in just two billionths of a second and can see objects up to 10 times farther away than any other telescope currently in use.

The project was a collaboration between the Veterinary Medicine and Astronomy departments at the University of Minnesota and will use a large mirror to capture images of the sky at high speed. The telescope is designed to be able to capture images of objects up to 10 times farther away than any other telescope currently in use.
