Demir wil harde aanpak van extremistische delinquenten: Elektronische enkelband als uitsluitingsoptie

Belgium’s secretary for asylum and migration, Sammy Mahdi has announced that they will use electronic ankle bracelets to keep a close eye on extremist delinquents, according to the Flemish newspaper De Standaard. On Sunday, Flemish energy minister Zuhal Demir discussed in De Zevende Dag (VRT) how she would like to see convicted extremist delinquents monitored using an ankle monitor bracelet that would prevent them from accessing social media.

Monitoring extremist delinquents

According to the Flemish Energy Minister, the measure is not only essential to “follow up on extremists and terrorists but other delinquents who also pose a threat.” In Demir’s view, “there must be stricter control over convicted extremists and terrorists”

Ankle bracelets as a way of exclusion

Demir believes using electronic ankle bracelets and prohibiting the use of social media would prevent radicalisation among the younger population.

“This measure that we want to develop can be seen as an exclusionary option. In other words, it is a way of removing people from the internet and social media, which could help to prevent radicalisation,” said Demir.

New legislation required

The proposal is still in its early stages, and it isn’t clear how soon the new measures will be put into effect. However, it requires new legislation because the use of this method of exclusion is not yet permitted under current law.
