Mikaela Shiffrin breaks Lindsey Vonn’s World Cup skiing record
The skiing legend and Olympic gold medalist, Lindsey Vonn, said on Wednesday that the 23-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin had broken her own World Cup skiing record. Vonn, who is Vonn’s team-mate in the “Greatest American Athlete” campaign, said Shiffrin, who won the gold medal in the women’s 10,000 metres at the Sochi Olympics in February, had skied the event in a time of just 2:25:48.
Shiffrin’s time would make her the fastest female skier in history, breaking the previous record of 2:27:27 set by Vonn in February of this year. The speed of the Shiffrin run is even more amazing when taking into account that she has only raced in the World Cup for three years – making this her first time competing at the highest level.
Vonn, who has said that she is “a little bit” surprised by this news, continued to talk about her new world record. She said that the time recorded by Shiffrin was “incredible” and that she herself was “very happy and relieved.” Vonn, who is also the founder of the “Greatest American Athlete” campaign, added that she knew that Shiffrin had the power to break records and was “incredibly motivated.”
It is not the first time that Shiffrin has broken a world record. In February of this year, she set a new world record in the women’s halfpipe skiing event when she recorded a time of 55.39 seconds. This was also the fastest halfpipe skiing time ever set by a woman.
